Free Fire Returns to India With Local Servers and New Parental Controls

Garena's standalone battle royale title Free Fire relaunched in India on October 28, 2026, ending a years-long absence from the market. The new version runs on cloud infrastructure based in India and introduces stricter age-verification and spending controls aimed at younger players.

Why the original game disappeared and what changed

While Garena Free Fire Max remained available to Indian users throughout, the original lightweight Free Fire had been unavailable in the country for an extended period. According to Garena, the game's return hinges on a key infrastructure shift: user data generated by Indian players will now be stored on servers located within India, a move that aligns with government expectations around domestic data storage. The company has not detailed additional technical specifications of this server setup.

Safety features built into the India release

Garena has paired the launch with a set of safeguards specifically for younger users. Players under 18 will need parental sign-off before they can access the game. The build also includes screen-time break reminders, daily play caps, and limits on in-game spending, measures designed to curb excessive play sessions and unchecked purchases. These controls are built into the standalone India version rather than offered as optional add-ons.

Device compatibility and festive content

Garena says the India release was engineered to run across a wide range of hardware, from budget phones with limited RAM to high-end flagships, reflecting the diversity of smartphones in use across the country. The game is free to download on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Alongside the launch, Garena is running a Diwali-themed campaign through November 15, adding festive skins, artwork, and in-game content inspired by India's varied regional and cultural traditions rather than a single generic celebration.

What stays the same

Despite the new India-specific layer, the core gameplay loop is unchanged: squads drop into a shrinking map and compete to be the last team standing. The India build layers additional features on top of this familiar structure, tailored to local player habits and device constraints, rather than altering the fundamental battle royale format.
