Laurel officials have scheduled a pair of public hearings in November to collect resident feedback on the city's Comprehensive Master Plan Update. The sessions, organized by the Master Plan Review Committee and the Planning Commission, mark a formal step in a planning process that will eventually require approval from the Mayor and City Council.
What's on the schedule
The Master Plan Review Committee will hold its hearing on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. via Zoom. Because this session is virtual, residents must email [email protected] in advance to receive the meeting link - there is no public walk-in option for this particular hearing.
The Planning Commission hearing follows on Tuesday, November 10, 2026, also at 6:00 p.m., but in person at the Council Chambers inside the Laurel Municipal Center, 8103 Sandy Spring Road. This format allows residents to speak directly before the commission and hear discussion in real time, which can surface different kinds of questions than a remote meeting typically does.
Why a master plan matters
A comprehensive master plan functions as a municipality's long-range policy document, guiding decisions on land use, zoning, infrastructure, housing density, and community facilities for years into the future. Local governments in Maryland periodically update these plans to reflect population changes, economic conditions, and evolving resident priorities. Because the document informs future zoning and development decisions, public input at this stage can shape how specific parcels or corridors are treated once the plan is adopted.
City officials note that the current draft is posted on Laurel's website, giving residents a chance to review proposed language, maps, or policy changes before the hearings. Reviewing the draft beforehand is likely to make public comments more specific and useful to committee members who are evaluating revisions.
What happens after these hearings
These two sessions are not the final word. According to the city, additional public hearings will be scheduled before the Mayor and City Council as the update advances through the formal approval process. That means residents who miss the November dates, or who want to weigh in again after seeing how the draft evolves, should expect further opportunities to comment.
Residents with questions about the plan or the hearing process can contact Jay Meashey, Director of the Department of Economic & Community Development, at 301-725-5300, ext. 2313, or by email at [email protected].
Practical considerations for residents
- The November 5 hearing requires advance registration by email; there is no same-day sign-up listed.
- The November 10 hearing is in person only, at the Laurel Municipal Center.
- The draft plan is available for review on the city's website ahead of either meeting.
- This is an interim stage - final adoption will involve separate hearings before the Mayor and City Council.
